It will soon be a hundred years since the discovery of penicillin in 1928. This fact changed humanity's ability to resist various bacteria for a long time and saved millions of lives. Even when Alexander Fleming received the Nobel Prize for his discovery in 1945, he warned about the risks associated with its overuse. The risk of antibiotic resistance is currently one of the greatest challenges for healthcare.
A project that examines the use and consumption of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine responds to this. The project follows on from a pilot study within SYRI that examined the situation among Czech practitioners. According to it, although they are mostly aware of the risks of antibiotic resistance, there are also large differences among general practitioners.
"Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics accelerates the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria. That is why the World Health Organization sees antibacterial resistance as one of the ten biggest global threats," said Marhánková.
